What is a wiki

  • Definition
    A wiki is a web site that allows users to add and update content on the site using their own Web browser. This is made possible by Wiki software that runs on the Web server. The term "wiki" comes from the Hawaiian phrase, "wiki wiki," which means "super fast."
  • Safety
    • Viewing – teachers can open their Wiki to the public or limit to members only.
      • Public, Protected, Private You can set up your wiki three different ways. Public means that anyone can read and edit a page. Protected means anyone can view the page but not edit it. Private means that only those with passwords can view and edit pages. This is a protected wiki. It is highly recommended that you do not make a class wiki public.
    • Membership – teachers decide who can join; students, parents, invited guests, or the public.
    • Protection – because of the collaborative nature of Wikis, teachers can lock specific sections so other members cannot modify.
    • Moderation – teachers can moderate all aspects of their Wiki for appropriateness.
    • Notification – teachers can set up instant notification when a member makes a post or changes any aspect of the Wiki.
  • Benefits
    • relatively simple technology
    • "real-world" collaboration skills developed
    • easy to track work
    • access from school or home on any browser
    • develop on-line communication skills
  • Pitfalls
    • somewhat labor intensive for the moderator
    • easy to copy and paste information
    • potential for inequitable collaboration
    • "helpful" parents have access
    • learning curve involved

Where to set one up

Teaching your students

  • Walk them through it step by step
  • Older students will benefit from the the second page of the handout
  • Remind them that they are representatives of our Lord as well as the school. They can be witnesses by the way they conduct themselves.

    • If you allow them to choose their own user names, discuss the appropriateness of the names.
    • They always figure out how to make an avatar. That can get as tricky if you do not know what a lot of the symbols mean.
    • Spend some time with the discussion tab. This is an important tool for communicating with students from another school. The written word can be misinterpreted, so communicating effectively is important.
